My paternal grandfather's furniture business Cherney’s Furniture Store, which he opened in Peterborough, Ontario in 1937, is emblematic of my family name. The Cherney’s furniture brand was known for enduring commitments to honesty and quality, values I carry forward.

I’m Niomi.

I developed two distinct pathways in my life: art and psychotherapy. For a long time I thought I had closed one chapter as an artist and moved on to a second one as a psychotherapist. I’m learning that chapters are hard to close and it’s better, though scary, to keep them all open. I spent many years training in contemporary dance choreography and performance, and countless hours rolling around on the floor.

I then spent the better part of my thirties training and working as a trauma therapist. Now I am creating performance again while continuing to practice as a therapist.

This site is a way to tie together pieces of my life that felt separate. Choreography and psychotherapy have a binding thread of being practices that both deepen connections to embodied memory, allowing us to layer fabrics and fold experiences that we don’t yet know cognitively.

I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN MAKE WORK WITH PASSION, DILIGENCE AND DEEP WISDOM.

I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN LISTEN TO EACH OTHER.

I BELIEVE THAT ARTWORK AND THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS ARE NOT NEUTRAL LANGUAGES. BOTH WIELD POWER.

I BELIEVE THAT THERAPY CAN BRING ABOUT INDIVIDUAL CHANGE AND THAT ART PROPELS SOCIAL CHANGE.
